THRIVE works to reduce suicide rates among American Indians and Alaska Natives living in the Pacific Northwest by providing programmatic technical assistance, suicide prevention trainings, and resources to the Northwest Tribes.

This project hosts the Annual THRIVE Conference; facilitates trainings and presentations on suicide prevention; and leads culturally informed social marketing campaigns, including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, We Are Connected, and the Caring Text Messages and Mind4Health text messaging services.

THRIVE Goals:

  1. Increase knowledge and awareness about suicide among Tribal community members, and in doing so, take steps to address the silence and fear that exists in many of our communities preventing use of available prevention and treatment services.
  2. Improve intertribal and interagency communication about suicide prevention and treatment in order to share and maximize limited resources, by working collaboratively with the Northwest Native Adolescent Health Alliance and other regional partners.
  3. Increase the capacity of Tribal health programs to track, prevent, and reduce suicidal ideation.

Primary Activities

Annual THRIVE Conference

This annual summer conference is for Native youth ages 13-19. The conference brings youth together to learn about health promotion and disease prevention with a strong focus on suicide prevention and mental health.

Mind4Health

A free, 90-minute online gatekeeper training that helps caring adults—teachers, parents, counselors, coaches, and others—recognize when a young person may be struggling online and connect them with support.

This training also includes a three-part text message series to help training participants build their mental health toolbox.

Zero Suicide Implementation Support

Zero Suicide is a national framework that helps health systems take a system-wide approach to suicide prevention. THRIVE provides training and technical assistance to Tribal clinics interested in adopting the Zero Suicide framework. Support includes staff orientation, implementation guidance, and access to introductory training materials.

Caring Text Messages Campaign

An evidence-based text messaging intervention developed by THRIVE with Native teens, college students, and Veterans. Participants receive hopeful, culturally tailored messages shown to help prevent suicide risk. Text “CARING” (Native youth), “COLLEGE,” or “VETERAN” to 65664 to join.
