NPAIHB’s North Star Washington State Tribal Prevention Systems (North Star) is a pilot initiative aimed at promoting social change and community well-being by delaying the onset of alcohol, tobacco, and substance use among youth.
This initiative is based on the Planet Youth Guidance Program, a primary prevention model designed to strengthen protective factors for youth. Five Washington Tribes are adapting the model to meet the diverse needs of their Tribal communities. The goal is to improve healthier long-term outcomes, reduce risk factors, and strengthen protective factors for Tribal youth from participating Tribes.
Tribal youth voices play a vital role in this work through a biannual survey targeting 15- to 16-year-olds. Results are returned within eight weeks and delivered to each Tribal community coalition. Data lays the foundation for evidence-based decision-making by the participating Tribes to drive long-term community and system changes.
