Press Release | September 23, 2026

The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) congratulates Mark Cruz (Klamath Tribes) on his confirmation and swearing-in as the 12th Director of the Indian Health Service (IHS).

“We are eager for Mark Cruz to serve in this new capacity as the Indian Health Service Director, as his nomination is a historic moment for Indian Country, especially for the Northwest region. We look forward to the work he’ll lead for the generations to come,” said Brandon Tupper, Klamath Tribal Council, NPAIHB Secretary.

“It was an honor to witness the swearing-in ceremony of the 12th Director of the Indian Health Service, said NPAIHB Executive Director Laura Platero. “We heard last night that the road is heavy, but Director Cruz will not walk it alone. He carries the support of the Northwest and the encouragement of those across Indian Country who are committed to advancing the health and wellness for the seventh generation. We wish the Director strength and success as he takes on this vital responsibility, as there is much work ahead, and a strong community standing behind it.”
