Become a Mentor

Access to Native mentors is essential to increasing Native representation in health research and improving the health of Native communities. NW NARCH is committed to maintaining an extensive network of AI/AN mentors who can support trainees at various stages of their education or career.

From high school to post-graduate school, individuals can give back or receive support from Native peers or experienced researchers who are dedicated to developing future generations of  Native health researchers. Opportunities exist for peer mentors, near-peer mentors, and experienced academic mentors.

Peer or Near-Peer Mentors

NW NARCH seeks currently enrolled AI/AN college or graduate students who are focusing on the biomedical/social sciences to serve as peer and near-peer mentors for NARCH trainees. Our goal is to cultivate sustainable mentor relationships and opportunities for Native students interested in pursuing higher education in the sciences & research.

Eligibility Criteria for Peer/Near-Peer Mentors:

  • Identify as American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Enrolled in college or graduate school studying public health, biomedical sciences, or social sciences
  • Be able to meet 1 hour a month with mentee
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to share experiences and insights with peers and younger AI/AN students
  • Experience as a mentor or mentee a plus
  • Current or former NARCH fellow/intern/scholar welcome to apply
Experienced Academic Mentors

We are seeking to add to our network of experienced academic researchers who will support NARCH trainees. Mentors should be affiliated with a tribe or have a demonstrated commitment to improving Native health.

Eligibility Criteria for Experienced Academic Mentors

  • Identify as American Indian or Alaska Native OR demonstrated commitment to improving AI/AN health
  • Employed as an Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor
  • Be available to meet 1 hour/month and advise trainees on capstone projects
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to share experiences and insights with peers and younger AI/AN students
  • Experience as a mentor preferred
