William Lambert, PhD
Associate Professor, OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, and Associate Director, Center for Healthy Communities
The Tribes of the Columbia River Basin are leaders in the protection of salmon in the Pacific Northwest. As sovereign nations, they are uniquely positioned to strengthen the fisheries via habitat protection and restoration, and through supplementation hatcheries. Additionally, the Tribes have actively contributed to policy making on the cleanup of contamination at Portland Harbor and other regional sites. In his presentation, Dr. Lambert will show a video produced by the Tribes and describe a community-university research project that addressed Tribal concerns about toxins present in salmon and other subsistence fish, and the potential risks posed to health.
Dr. Lambert is the Associate Director of the OHSU Center for Healthy Communities, a CDC-funded Prevention Research Center that focuses on the development of interventions to reduce chronic disease in American Indian and Alaska Native populations. Dr. Lambert is trained as an environmental epidemiologist and he has conducted research with tribal communities for over 20 years. When at the University of New Mexico during 1987-2000, Dr. Lambert worked with southwest tribes on outdoor and indoor air pollution, and uranium mining and milling. Since moving to Oregon in 2001, he has conducted projects with the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board and tribal communities on topics of water and air pollution.
Sponsored by the NW Native American Research Centers for Health (NW NARCH), Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) and the CDC-funded Oregon Prevention Research Center (PRC), the Center for Healthy Communities at OHSU.
