71s ANNUAL LUMMI NATION STOMMISH WATER FESTIVAL HONORS THE VETERANS June 16 -18

71st Annual Lummi Nation Stommish Water Festival, “Water is Life” is set for June 16-18, 2017, at Gooseberry Point, 15 miles west of Bellingham, Wa. The Lummi veterans who served during the Korean War will be honored.
In 1946, when World War II Lummi Veterans were returning home, the WWI Lummi People decided to celebrate their safe return, and that his how the Stommish began. Henry Cagey, Chairman of the Lummi Stommish Committee a Lummi Indian Business Council member and a veteran said, “It is an important event for the Lummi Nation bringing together community, families and our neighbors to join festivities in honor of our Veterans. This annual event is a way to share our culture.”
The Lummi Stommish Pageant and recognition of our Lummi Veterans is scheduled for Wednesday, June 14, 2017, 5 p.m. at the Wexliem Building, 2334 Lummi View Drive on the Lummi Reservation, located at Gooseberry Point. Contestants will get the opportunity to display their talents and also address the audience. The categories include: Lummi Stommish Princess and Warrior (age 15-18); Junior Princess and Junior Warrior (age 12-14); Miss Tween and Tween Warrior (age 9-11); Little Princess and Little Warrior (age 6-8); and Tiny Tots (5 and under). A dinner will be compliments of the Silver Reef Casino.
Pageant Coordinator, Cynthia Wilson said, “This year, past Lummi Stommish Princess Norma Bosler will be honored and recognized, and she was crowned in 1950.” Wilson is very excited because there are 15 contestants this year.
A Veterans Parade “Honoring Our Heroes” is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, 2017, 12:00 noon at the Lummi Stommish Grounds. Followed by the 11 men and 11 women war canoe races, including the six men and six women canoe races, the doubles and singles Other events will include a traditional “Swan Clan Dancers” performance, along with a Sla Hal Bone Game Tournament.
The Sla Hal Bone Game Tournament registration is Saturday, June 17, 2017, 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. The entry fee is $150.00 for the three to five member teams. The first prize will be $10,000 and jackets; second prize $5,000 and jackets; third prize $3,000 and jackets; and fourth prize $2,000 and hoodies. On Sunday, June 18, 2017, the canoe races begin at 11:00 a.m. Entertainment will include various indigenous dance groups, the Blackhawk Singers, the “Red River Band”, 50’s and 60’s Rock ‘n Roll music. There will be a carnival for all to enjoy. The Lummi Nation will offer the famous barbecued salmon, fresh crab, along with vendors with other foods, arts and crafts.
This festival is a drug and alcohol free event.
