Building Inclusive Data Visualizations

Tuesday, December 14, 2021
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. PT

Try as you might, even good public health data visualizations can harm, exclude, or misrepresent people.

The December session of Hot Topics in Practice will share inspiring tips for developing more inclusive data practices that better represent the whole people behind the numbers.

This one-hour webinar will help you identify common biases that impact data collection, cleaning, and visualization, and offer ideas for how to be more mindful in your approaches. This presentation is intended to help “non-data people” feel more confident in setting up data structures and working with incomplete or problematic data, including working with limitations.

Data inclusivity doesn’t just magically happen, you have to be intentional. Register today to learn how.

Presenter
Negeen Aghassibake
Data Visualization Librarian
University of Washington Libraries

Important Notes About Hot Topics

Speaker slides are posted on our website the morning of the webinar. Each session is recorded and made available by the next day. Audio is available through computer or by phone. Closed captioning will also be available during the webinar.

Hot Topics in Practice is a monthly webinar hosted by the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice. Guest speakers from local, state, tribal, and national organizations present on current issues affecting public health practice.

Up to 1 CPH recertification credit may be earned by viewing this webinar. Visit the National Board of Public Health Examiners to learn more.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration will host two listening sessions regarding our collaborative efforts to administer VA’s Indian Health Service/Tribal Health Program (IHS/THP) Reimbursement Agreement Program (RAP) and implement Public Law 116-311, Proper and Reimbursed Care for Native Veterans Act. Inclusion of PRC into the program will require adopting a new agreement template. A tribal consultation will be held at a future date that incorporates information obtained from these sessions. Public Law 116-311 amends Section 405(c) of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (25 U.S.C. 1645) by clarifying the authority to reimburse for services regardless of whether they are provided directly by the Service, an Indian tribe, or tribal organization, through purchased/referred care, or through a contract for travel described in section 213(b).

Written comments may also be submitted to tribalgovernmentconsultation@va.gov before February 13, 2022. For questions regarding these efforts, please contact Kara Hawthorne at Tribal.Agreements@va.gov. Program information can be found on the VA Office of Community Care’s website:  https://www.va.gov/COMMUNITYCARE/providers/info_IHS-THP.asp, and the Office of Tribal Government Relations Web site: http://www.va.gov/tribalgovernment.
