Tribal Initiatives Promising Interventions
Goal
The overall goal of the Tribal Initiatives Promising Interventions (TIPI) Project is to reduce commercial tobacco use by assessing successful tribal interventions among selected American Indian/Alaska Native communities across the U.S., and from these findings, provide appropriate training and technical assistance to emerging tribal tobacco education and cessation programs.
About Project TIPI
Project TIPI will increase the capacity and sustainability of network stakeholders. Each tribe is responsible for tobacco policies and control practices and each has its own approach to tobacco prevention and cessation. Funding from the master settlement agreement and state programs have assisted some tribal programs; however, no comprehensive evaluation of tribal tobacco programs is currently available to maximize the limited resources in tobacco prevention and control, determining effectiveness of programs must be a priority.
By evaluating promising tribal cessation interventions and disseminating the results, tribes with little or no tobacco control experience will have access to capacity-building information that can directly improve local programs and reduce the prevalence of commercial tobacco use.
The key activities of Project TIPI are listed below:
- Disseminate a document that summarizes Best and Promising Practices that summarize good, culturally specific American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) tobacco projects.
- Identify and utilize an existing evaluation instrument developed specifically for tribal interventions, and revise if necessary.
- Develop a community mentor training guide and disseminate the guide (after two tribal organizations have utilized and provided any necessary changes to the guide).
- Provide access to tribal community organizations to mentor selected communities over the course of the grant period.
- Partner with Tobacco Coordinators from three selected communities to conduct a specific evaluation protocol.
- Network with state-based tobacco programs and quit lines to increase AI/AN involvement.
- Analyze, summarize and disseminate the results of this project in a report to NTTPN stakeholders.
