Tribal Technical Advisory Group (TTAG)

Overview

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is required by Presidential Executive Order No. 13175, “Consultation and Coordination With Indian Tribal Governments,” to engage in Tribal consultation. This order was re-affirmed by President Bush in a letter from Alberto R. Gonzales, Counsel to the President, to engage in Tribal consultation. To comply with this order, it is essential that policy and technical decisions are made with full knowledge of the impact on access to health care for American Indian and Alaska Native beneficiaries.

The Federal delivery of health services and funding of programs to maintain and improve the health of American Indians and Alaska Natives are consonant with and required by the Federal Government’s historical and unique legal relationship with Indian Tribes, as reflected in the U.S. Constitution. CMS has established the Tribal Technical Advisory Group (TTAG) to enhance the Government-to-Government relationship, honor Federal trust responsibilities and obligations to Tribes and Native people, and increase understanding between CMS and Tribal health programs, including those administered by the Indian Health Service (IHS).
