73rd Annual Lummi Nation Stommish Water Festival: “Honoring Our Way of Life and Warriors” June 21 – 23

LUMMI NATION, WA – Lummi Nation welcomes all to join them in celebrating the 73rd Annual
Lummi Nation Stommish Water Festival set for June 21-23, 2019. The Stommish Water Festival will be
held at the Lummi Nation Stommish Grounds located at 2295 Lummi View Drive at Gooseberry Point,
15 miles west of Bellingham, Washington.
In 1946, when World War II Lummi Veterans were returning home, the WWI Lummi People decide to
celebrate their safe return, and this is how the Stommish Festival began. Lummi Nation Chairman Jeremiah
Julius shared, “The Lummi way of life has always centered around the sea. Water connects us to
our relatives near and far; and to our livelihood, the rich resources that bless our homeland. The Lummi
Stommish Water Festival is a way to connect with the water and come together as a community to celebrate
our heroes. We continue that tradition in honoring our veterans and we welcome you all to join us
for the festivities.”
Henry Cagey, Veteran, LIBC Council Member and the Chairman of the Lummi Nation Stommish Committee
shared, “Please join us at the 73rd Annual Lummi Nation Stommish Water Festival to experience
our culture and traditions with canoe races, traditional barbecued salmon, crab, shrimp, arts and crafts,
Sla-Hal games, and so much more.”
On Friday, June 21, 2019, youth canoe races will begin with singles, doubles and the 6 men and women
canoes starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2019, races will begin at 9:30 a.m. with youth singles
followed by Women’s, Men’s, 45 & Up, then Doubles,6 Man, 11 Man, and a Fun Race – Singles Relay.
And on Sunday, June 23, 2019, the canoe races begin at 10:30 a.m., starting with the 11 member canoe
Veterans Parade will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019, 12noon at the Lummi Nation Stommish Grounds
to honor Veterans and celebrate their safe return. A Military Honors Gun Salute in remembrance of
WWII Veterans will talk place following the parade.
The Sla Hal Bone Game Tournament registration is Saturday, June 22, 2019, 12noon to 2pm. The entry
fee is $150.000 for the three to five member teams. The first prize will be $10,000 and jackets; second
prize $5,000 and jackets; third prize $3,000 and jackets; and fourth prize $2,000 and hoodies. For more

Festivities include traditional song and dance groups; the “Red River Band” featuring 50’s and 60’s
Rock n’ Roll music, Sla Hal bone game, canoe races, and carnival. Lummi Nation will offer the famous
barbecued salmon, fresh crab, shrimp, fried bread, along with vendors offering foods, arts and crafts.
This festival is a drug and alcohol free event.
