These awards, administered by the IHS, Division of Oral Health, are intended to assist IHS, tribal, and urban programs to address the Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2010 and 2020 oral health objectives, and especially the IHS Division of Oral Health Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) oral health objectives.  These funds must be used to enhance current, recently initiated HP/DP program efforts, or to implement new initiatives.  Strategies that use proven or evidence based dental public health principles and methods are encouraged.  The maximum award is $15,000 and there is a separate category of submission for mini-grants which are $2,000 or less. IHS, HQ funded a total of 24 proposals this year.

Four IHS Areas accounted for two-thirds of all awards this year.  Albuquerque, Portland, Nashville, and Bemidji received 16 of 24 awards total.  I applaud the Support Centers in these and other Areas in their efforts to assist local programs with preventive initiatives.
