The A. Susana Santos’ Journeys in Creativity Aug 10 - 24
July 31 2008
August 10-24, 2008: Art of the Canoe
In fourteen amazing art-packed days, sixteen teenagers will embark on a journey together
through the remarkable world of Native American art and culture. Their guides on this
expedition will work side-by-side with them in intensive, hands-on art workshops, share cross
cultural experiences with them, and trek with them to local museums and galleries. This
creative cultural exploration will take place on the beautiful campus of Oregon College of
Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon.
History: The Journeys in Creativity program was founded
in partnership with OCAC, The Museum of Warm Springs
and Kah-Nee-Ta by the late A. Susana Santos, an alumna
of OCAC and tribal member of the Confederated Tribes
of Warm Springs. She sought to help further the study of
Contemporary Native American Art and Craft for Native
American students who might pursue a secondary education
or profession in the arts.
Who is eligible: Sixteen Teens ages 15-19 who show an
interest and talent in art and exploring culture.
Where it will happen: Workshops and artist presentations
will occur on the Oregon College of Art and Craft campus
in Portland, OR; however, field trips will travel to downtown
Portland, and to significant cultural areas in both Washington
and Oregon. All teens will stay on campus in dorm-style
housing for two weeks.
How do I apply: Check out the application requirements
on the next page for all the details. The deadline to
receive applications is Friday, May 23, 2008
(all materials must be received by this date.)
How much does it cost: This program is fully funded by
many generous sponsors, so the program is free for the
sixteen selected participants. All participants must make
their own arrangements for travel to and from the camp.
We do not have travel vouchers and this cost must be
absorbed by the participant. However, arrangements can
be made with camp staff to pick up youth if traveling by
bus, train or plane.

Details: Journeys in Creativity introduces teens to the
richness of Native American art and tradition through visual
art workshops, field trips and live performances.
The Journeys 2008 camp focus is the “Art of the Canoe.”
Students will be introduced to the world of traditional
Native American aquatic transportation. Over the past two
thousand years the canoe has been an essential tool for
the livelihood of natives. Canoe shapes and designs have
changed little over the centuries, as native cultures created
elaborate cultural practices, ceremonies and taboos surrounding
their use and care.
The Journeys staff and visiting workshop instructors will
delve into the history of the Native American canoe, providing
a context and deeper understanding of the rich culture.
Journeys students will participate in various hands-on
workshops, including making a curved carving knife, carving
a canoe model, and constructing a canoe paddle. The
teens will also collaborate to produce a full-size Chinook
Style “seal hunting” canoe.
Each day will begin at 9:00 am and end at 8:00 pm, but
some field trip days will be longer. Students will be accompanied
by chaperones throughout the program’s duration.
The participants will have the opportunity to explore the life
of a college art student as they participate in intensive art
workshops in the well equipped studios of Oregon College
of Art and Craft.
Daily activities will also include lively group meals, field trips
to local art museums and galleries and visits to local book
and art supply stores (students will be provided a small
stipend to spend at these locations). In addition, public performances
featuring storytelling and traditional dance are
scheduled during the week. Friends and family are invited
to attend these performances.
Teens will travel to the campus of Oregon College of Art
and Craft in Portland on Sunday, August 10, 2008. Chaperones
will accompany students 24 hours/day throughout
the program. All meals and dorm-style housing are provided,
but participants will need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow,
towel, clothes, toiletries and personal items. Teens will
return home the afternoon of Sunday, August 24, 2008.
The A. Susana Santos’ Journeys in Creativity Program
was developed in collaboration with the The Museum At
Warm Springs and Kah-Nee-Ta to provide opportunities to
Native American youth who show interest in learning about
contemporary art and craft.
This program was also made possible by the generous
support of the Bloomfield Family Foundation, Charlotte
Martin Foundation, Herbert A. Templeton Foundation, Irwin
Foundation, and Lamb Foundation.
“I enjoyed my entire experience of Journeys.
I loved meeting new people, listening to the guest speakers,
and visiting the different museums in Portland.”

“My favorite parts of Journeys were learning
about a whole new culture, making artwork, and making
great friends. I had a lot of fun, and wouldn’t change
a thing about the camp except to make it longer!”
